Agartala, Sep 26: Women make up only 6.29% of the total convicted prisoners in Tripura, with just 35 female convicts currently serving sentences across 12 functional jails in the state. This data was revealed by the Minister-in-charge of Jail during the recently concluded Tripura Assembly session in response to a question by CPIM MLA Nirmal Biswas.

Out of the 35 female convicts, 27 are serving Rigorous Imprisonment, while 8 are undergoing Simple Imprisonment. The total number of convicted prisoners in the state stands at 556. As of September 15, 2025, the overall prison population is 1,622—indicating that the majority of inmates are undertrial prisoners.

Tripura has 13 jails, though the Sabroom sub-jail is currently non-functional. The highest number of inmates (756) is housed in the Central Correctional Home, Bishalgarh, while the Amarpur sub-jail has the lowest inmate count. Six sub-jails in the state have inmate numbers below 100, with Sonamura sub-jail housing the most among them at 124.

In a separate query, Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy sought details about jail staffing. The minister disclosed that 438 posts are currently vacant. Recruitment is underway for 249 male and 14 female prison guards. Additionally, 16 senior computer assistants are being recruited, and the Tripura Public Service Commission has been tasked with hiring four pharmacists.

On medical facilities, the minister stated that two doctors and four staff nurses are posted at the Bishalgarh Central Correctional Home. Sub-jails rely on weekly visits from local hospital doctors, and prisoners requiring advanced care are referred to government hospitals.
