Agartala, July 30: A three-member enquiry committee of the Directorate of Secondary Education, Tripura, on Wednesday visited Barpathari in Belonia subdivision to investigate the tragic suicide of Class 10 student Trisha Majumder. The girl allegedly ended her life after reportedly being humiliated by a teacher over confusion in her answer script.
The team, comprising Lisa Bardhan (Joint Director of Elementary Education), Kajal Kumar Bhowmik (OSD, Directorate of Secondary Education) and Sudip Sarkar (OSD, DEO West office), met the accused teacher of Sonarpur Class XII School and interacted with the grieving family. Their visit coincided with the performance of Trisha’s Shraddh (last rites) at her residence.
The enquiry was ordered by the Director of Secondary Education under instructions from Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who had expressed deep concern over the incident and assured that strict action would be taken once the facts were established.
Speaking to reporters, committee head Lisa Bardhan said, “We are conducting a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances leading to this heartbreaking incident. We are recording statements of everyone concerned and will soon submit a comprehensive report to the higher authorities.”
Preliminary findings suggest the student may have taken the extreme step after being reprimanded in front of her classmates, which possibly caused severe emotional distress.
The final report is expected to be submitted by Thursday.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and grief across South Tripura, with many voices demanding accountability from schools and stronger mental health support systems for students to prevent such tragedies in the future.
