In an unusual incident from Tripura’s Gomati district, police intervened to separate a 23-year-old man from his second wife, barely a week after their secret marriage. The action came after strong objections from the man’s mother and his first wife, who declared the second marriage illegal.

According to police, the incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Udaipur Women Police Station. The man, identified as Sagar Sarkar (23) of Melaghar, had married Manika Das of Udaipur three years ago, and the couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old child. However, Sarkar recently married another woman, Puja Malakar of Santirbazar, without informing his family or his first wife.

When the matter came to light, both women, along with Sarkar, approached the Women Police Station seeking mediation. Speaking to reporters, Manika Das said she would not accept her husband’s second marriage. “I am his legally wedded wife. Under Indian law, a second marriage during the subsistence of the first is void,” she stated firmly.

Puja Malakar, on the other hand, claimed that she had been compelled to marry Sarkar after their relationship became public. “Initially, we treated each other as brother and sister, but later we developed feelings. When locals learned about our affair, they forced us to marry,” she said.

Sarkar told reporters that he wished to take responsibility for both women, remarking, “I want to care for both my wives. The law cannot control emotions or relationships.”

After hearing all sides, police directed Malakar to return to her parental home and advised Sarkar to live with and support his first wife and child. No formal complaint has been registered in the case, officials confirmed.
