Agartala, August 9: In a passionate appeal ahead of World Indigenous Day, royal scion and Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma called upon the indigenous people of Tripura to proudly celebrate their identity, culture, and heritage on August 9. Speaking to the media, Debbarma urged all community members to wear traditional attire, cook indigenous dishes, and participate in a united show of cultural pride.

“August 9 is our day. On World Indigenous Day, I request all our people to come out proudly in traditional dress, showcasing our rich heritage,” he said. “Let us prepare and share our indigenous meals like Chakwi, Gudok, and Mosdeng — at home, in schools, colleges, or with colleagues at work. This is the time to stand tall and be proud of our identity.”

In addition to the cultural celebrations, Debbarma made a strong political statement, accusing the State Election Commission of denying constitutional rights to indigenous people by not conducting Village Council (VC) elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

“Our rights are being denied. Despite the constitutional provision for VC elections, the State Election Commission has failed to act,” he stated.

To voice this concern, Debbarma called upon all his “warriors” and supporters to join a mass Homchang Rally across every part of Tripura on the evening of August 9. He said the rally would serve as a peaceful but powerful message of unity, resistance, and demand for rightful representation.

“The rally is not just about celebration — it is about protest, identity, and justice,” he emphasized.

World Indigenous Day is observed globally to honour the rights and cultures of indigenous populations. This year, Tripura’s indigenous communities are expected to mark the occasion with renewed pride and a call for action.
