Secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD), Kiran Gitte, chaired an important coordination meeting at the Belonia Circuit House to address critical infrastructure and flood management issues in the region. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the PWD, Water Resources Department, Flood Control, Belonia Municipality, and other concerned departments.
The agenda focused on strengthening flood protection infrastructure, assessing recent damages, and enhancing coordination among departments to tackle cross-border challenges. The meeting gained added urgency following recent reports of dam construction by Bangladesh near the international border, which may have implications on water flow and embankment stability on the Indian side.
Earlier in the day, Secretary Gitte, accompanied by top officials from the Border Security Force (BSF), including Tripura Frontier IG Ashwini Kumar, as well as local administrative and departmental officers, visited the disputed site near the India-Bangladesh border. The area in question is located in the North Belonia and Ballamukha regions under the Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar and Ishan Chandra Nagar Gram Panchayats.
During the field inspection, concerns were raised regarding the potential violation of international agreements due to dam construction by the neighbouring country. The visiting team assessed the situation on-ground and interacted with local residents to understand the challenges faced due to flooding and erosion.
At the Circuit House meeting, Secretary Gitte emphasized the importance of a coordinated response to ensure timely repair and long-term strengthening of embankments and flood-prone zones. He also directed departments to expedite ongoing restoration work and prepare a comprehensive report to be submitted to the state government.
The session concluded with a renewed focus on inter-departmental cooperation and strategic planning to safeguard the border region and protect residents from recurring flood threats.
