Agartala, September 2: A late-night security breach at the newly constructed MLA Hostel near the ILS Hospital complex in Agartala has triggered widespread alarm over the safety of elected representatives in Tripura.

According to reports, three intoxicated youths barged into the premises around 10:30 PM on Monday and allegedly hurled abusive language and death threats at Kanchanpur’s Tipra Motha MLA, Philip Kumar Reang. Despite the hostel being located close to the NCC police station, the youths managed to flee the spot in their vehicle before police could intervene.

The incident shocked the MLA, who immediately sought help. Police have since launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from the hostel to identify the suspects and trace their movements. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken once the culprits are identified.

The breach has raised troubling questions about the adequacy of security arrangements at the MLA Hostel, a facility meant to provide a safe residential space for legislators. Questions such as how the intruders gained entry at night, whether security personnel were posted at the gate, and what motivated the attack remain unanswered.

The matter quickly escalated into a political issue. On Tuesday, several Tipra Motha MLAs met Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at the Secretariat to voice their concerns. Speaking to reporters, MLA Brishaketu Debbarma stressed that the issue was beyond party lines. “We have spoken to the Chief Minister, IG Law and Order, and other authorities regarding this serious security breach. It is not just about one MLA. Even if the attack was on an opposition legislator, we would have raised the same concerns. We trust that the administration will take adequate steps to prevent such lapses in the future,” he said.

With the Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections approaching, the timing of the incident has heightened public unease. The state administration now faces mounting pressure to plug security loopholes, restore public confidence, and ensure that elected representatives are adequately protected regardless of political affiliation.
