Agartala, July 7: Tensions within the BJP-led alliance in Tripura have intensified as Tipra Motha, a key partner in the ruling coalition, staged a protest procession in Agartala on Monday. The party accused the state government of inaction over the rising issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Led by Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, the rally began at Swami Vivekananda Maidan and passed through major streets of the capital, with protestors demanding strict implementation of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) guidelines. These include identification, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants.

The protest followed a strong statement by Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who on Sunday echoed similar concerns. He warned that continued infiltration poses a threat to the identity and rights of Tripura’s indigenous communities.

MLA Ranjit Debbarma lashed out at the BJP-led state government, accusing it of “vote-bank politics” and comparing its inaction unfavorably with measures taken in other BJP-ruled states like Assam and Gujarat. He pointed out that Assam has implemented MHA directives effectively, while Tripura remains silent despite repeated warnings.

The protest also gained momentum after Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha recently acknowledged that Tripura is being used as a corridor by infiltrators. However, he claimed that stricter enforcement has discouraged many from settling in the state, unlike in previous years.

Tipra Motha leaders, however, argue that mere acknowledgment is not enough and have called for immediate and decisive action. The protest reflects growing frustration over the state government’s approach to the issue and may further strain the alliance.

The agitation also comes amid renewed calls for the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, which includes provisions for greater protection of indigenous rights and cultural identity in the state.
