Agartala, May 11: Senior Kunal Ghosh leader and newly elected MLA to the West Bengal Assembly was granted bail on Monday by the Gomati District and Sessions Court in connection with a case registered against him in Tripura in October 2021.
Ghosh appeared before the court during the hearing of the case, which stems from a public meeting he had addressed in Agartala nearly five years ago. After hearing the matter, the court allowed his bail plea.
Speaking briefly to reporters after the hearing, Ghosh confirmed the development and said, “A case was registered against me. We prayed for bail and the court granted me bail.”
However, the Trinamool Congress leader avoided commenting on the specific allegations and charges framed against him in the case. When questioned by journalists regarding the nature of the charges, he declined to elaborate.
Later, Ghosh’s advocate addressed the media and provided details regarding the background of the case. According to the advocate, the case was registered following a public meeting held by Ghosh in Agartala on October 31, 2021.
“At that meeting, a portion of his speech was alleged to be objectionable and hurt the religious sentiments of the complainant. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and carried out an investigation,” the advocate stated.
He further informed that after completing the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet before the court, following which the trial process formally began.
“The matter came up for hearing today. We submitted a prayer seeking bail for our client, and the court granted the bail,” the advocate added.
The case dates back to the politically charged atmosphere in Tripura during 2021, when several opposition leaders from West Bengal, including Trinamool Congress representatives, frequently visited the state amid heightened political activities and organisational expansion efforts by the party.
Monday’s court proceedings attracted attention due to Ghosh’s recent electoral victory in West Bengal and his continued prominence within the Trinamool Congress leadership. Further hearings in the matter are expected as the judicial process continues.
