Agartala, March 26 – Inmates in Tripura made a notable contribution of ₹2.78 lakh in revenue during the 2024-25 fiscal year through agricultural and material production, as revealed during the Tripura Assembly’s ongoing budget session. While the revenue marked a slight decline compared to the previous year, it still represented an increase of ₹45,000 over the 2022-23 fiscal year. This consistent contribution over the last three years has been deposited under the ‘Head of Account’ in the government treasury, underscoring the role of inmates in generating revenue through productive activities while incarcerated.

In a rare success story of rehabilitation, an inmate from Gandachara Sub-Divisional Jail passed the secondary examination in 2024, highlighting significant progress in the state’s efforts to reintegrate inmates into society through education. This achievement exemplifies the potential for positive change within the prison system.

The Assembly session also brought attention to the severe challenges faced by Tripura’s agricultural sector due to devastating floods and heavy rainfall in August 2024. According to official records, 2,05,578 farmers were impacted by the floods, leading to the distribution of ₹29.46 crore in financial assistance. Of this, ₹20 crore was allocated to 1,60,229 farmers, while ₹9.46 crore was given to 45,349 horticulture and other farmers.

Khowai district bore the brunt of the damage, with 6,231 hectares of land submerged, severely disrupting livelihoods. Farmers in Rishyamukh and Padmabil blocks, where substantial crop losses occurred, received financial and agricultural aid, including funds for clearing debris and support for Kharif crops. Additionally, the state government announced plans to expand insurance coverage for potato and watermelon farmers starting in the 2025-26 fiscal year, aiming to enhance the resilience and livelihood security of the farming community.
