Agartala: mar 28: The Tripura government is currently working to register 919 khas properties under the name of Waqf, as revealed by the Minority Welfare Department in response to a question raised by legislator Birjit Sinha in the Tripura Legislative Assembly. The Tripura Waqf Board has confirmed that there are 1,899 Waqf properties in the state. Of these, 980 properties are already registered under the name of Waqf or Mutawalli, while the remaining 919 properties are still classified as khas properties.
These 919 khas properties, as noted in their records, are designated for the use of the Muslim community. The properties fall into various categories, including mosques, cemeteries, Eidgahs, dargahs, pir shrines, maktabs/madrasas, and other land or ponds. Specifically, there are 602 mosques, 920 cemeteries, 55 Eidgahs, 5 dargahs, 47 pir shrines, 57 madrasas, and 213 other properties like land and ponds.
The properties in question were recorded as khas properties during surveys conducted in 1960 and the subsequent resurvey in 1980. However, at that time, no initiative was taken by the government to transfer these properties under the Waqf Board’s control. The current government has now decided to address this issue and is taking steps to register these 919 khas properties as Waqf properties, ensuring that they are officially recognized and managed by the Waqf Board.
Additionally, the Waqf Board is actively working to address cases of illegal occupation of Waqf properties. The board is utilizing administrative measures and relevant laws, such as the Tripura Land Revenue Act, to remove illegal occupants and restore the properties to their rightful status under the Waqf Board’s authority.
