Agartala: July 30: In a bid to strengthen Tripura’s fish production and promote self-reliance in aquaculture, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das on Wednesday participated in a fish seed release programme at a large water body in Jagannathpur, under the Fatikroy Assembly constituency.

The event, organized by the Fisheries Department, is part of a broader initiative aimed at boosting local fish cultivation and reducing the state’s dependence on imports. Highlighting the importance of this step, the Minister said that the government is committed to making large reservoirs across the state suitable for aquaculture in order to meet the rising demand for fish among the people of Tripura.

“Our primary objective is to make these water bodies productive so that Tripura can meet its own requirements,” Sudhangshu Das said. He stressed that with the adoption of scientific fish farming techniques and the full use of departmental schemes, Tripura can not only achieve self-sufficiency but also aspire to export fish to other states in the near future.

The Minister added that the initiative represents the government’s larger vision of sustainable aquaculture development and rural economic empowerment. By encouraging modern methods and better management of resources, the government aims to increase the income of fish farmers while creating new avenues for livelihood.

The Fisheries Department has been conducting similar fish seed release programmes in different parts of the state to support farmers and enhance fish availability in local markets. Officials believe that with consistent efforts, Tripura will significantly cut down its reliance on fish imports and ensure steady economic growth for its fishing community.
