Agartala, Sep 28: Tripura has witnessed significant growth in the tourism sector, with domestic visits soaring by 64.07 per cent and foreign arrivals increasing by 36.15 per cent in 2024, state Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced on Sunday.

Sharing the figures on social media, Chowdhury said domestic tourist arrivals jumped from 0.366 million in 2023 to 0.601 million in 2024. Foreign tourist visits rose from 0.067 million to 0.091 million during the same period. With this, Tripura continues to hold the second position in the Northeast for foreign tourist arrivals, after Sikkim.

Calling it a “remarkable success,” the minister congratulated Chief Minister Manik Saha, the people of Tripura, and the Tourism Department for the achievement. He added that such growth reflects the state’s rising prominence as a destination in the region.

Chowdhury also highlighted support from the Centre for strengthening tourism infrastructure. He recently met Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi to discuss the state’s tourism initiatives.

During his meeting with Scindia, the minister sought financial support for new projects aimed at boosting connectivity and infrastructure. “The DoNER Minister assured all possible help to strengthen the tourism sector in the state,” Chowdhury wrote in a Facebook post.

He further informed that Finance Minister Sitharaman expressed her willingness to extend cooperation for upcoming projects of the department.

Tourism Department Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma and Director Prashant Badal Negi accompanied the minister during the meetings.

Chowdhury said the combined efforts of the state and central governments would ensure continued growth in the sector, opening new opportunities for employment and economic development in Tripura.
