Agartala, Oct 16, 2025 — Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has announced that he will file a petition in the Supreme Court on October 17 to protect the land and traditional rights of Tripura’s indigenous tribal communities.

Taking to social media on Thursday, Pradyot said that successive governments have repeatedly ignored the constitutional and customary rights of the state’s tribal population. “The fate of our people cannot be decided by District Magistrates acting on the instructions of their superiors,” he stated, emphasising that the Governor, as the constitutional custodian of the Sixth Schedule areas, must act in the interest of the indigenous communities.

Pradyot revealed that several officials and lawyers have extended their support in preparing the case, even at the risk of losing their jobs. Expressing gratitude for their courage, he remarked, “Their bravery and commitment to justice have strengthened our fight for the rights of our people.”

He further criticised the current state government for allegedly withholding several key bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). These bills, aimed at reinforcing land and traditional rights within the Sixth Schedule framework, have not yet been forwarded to the Governor for approval, effectively stalling their implementation.

Pradyot, who has been at the forefront of the movement demanding “Greater Tipraland” and stronger constitutional protections for indigenous people, said that taking the matter to the Supreme Court marks a new phase in his struggle.

“This is not just a political fight; it is about justice, dignity, and the survival of our identity,” he said, urging the tribal population to unite behind the cause as the matter heads to the country’s highest court.
