Agartala, February 25: The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress on Wednesday staged a mass sit-in demonstration in Agartala condemning the arrest of Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national president Uday Bhanu Chib in connection with protests during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

Raising slogans and holding placards, party workers demanded the immediate release of Chib and other detained Youth Congress members. They also called for the withdrawal of what they described as “false and politically motivated charges” against the youth leaders.

Chib was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into protests staged during the AI Impact Summit in the national capital. The Youth Congress had demonstrated at the venue, alleging that the summit sought to divert attention from key policy decisions of the Centre, particularly concerning a recent trade agreement with the United States and other strategic issues.

Addressing reporters, Tripura Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha termed the arrest “illegal” and accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of attempting to suppress democratic dissent.

“In a democracy, raising voices, asking questions and protesting are not crimes. They are the strongest pillars of democratic expression,” Saha said, condemning the action taken by the Delhi Police.

He maintained that the detained members were peacefully protesting and had not engaged in any violence. According to him, the protest aimed to highlight alleged compromises by the Prime Minister, including claims of unequal trade arrangements that could adversely affect Indian farmers, textile units and food grain producers.

The Youth Congress further criticised the police action and warned that it would intensify its agitation if the arrested leaders are not released immediately.
