Agartala:
In a significant anti-drug operation, East Agartala Police Station officials apprehended two men at Jogendranagar Railway Station on Thursday night, recovering a large consignment of cough syrup, which is often misused as a narcotic substance.

Officer-in-Charge Subrata Debnath confirmed that 50 bottles of cough syrup were seized during the operation. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ajay Kumar and Bikram Kumar, both residents of Nalanda district, Bihar.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the duo had transported the narcotic-laced cough syrup from Patna by train. Police officials estimate the market value of the seized consignment at approximately Rs 75,000.

The OC emphasized that such seizures form a critical part of the ongoing crackdown on illegal drug trafficking in the state, aiming to curb the circulation of substances that are commonly abused. He added that cough syrup misuse has emerged as a growing concern in the region, making such enforcement actions imperative.

“The detainees will be produced before the court today, seeking police remand for further investigation,” Debnath said. Authorities are working to trace the larger network involved in the procurement and distribution of the contraband.

Police sources indicated that this seizure is part of a broader operation targeting the smuggling and misuse of pharmaceutical drugs as narcotics, with law enforcement agencies stepping up vigilance at key transit points like railway stations.

The operation has been lauded as a proactive measure to prevent the illegal circulation of controlled substances and safeguard public health. Officials urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in reporting suspicious activities, highlighting that collective vigilance is crucial in combating drug trafficking.

Investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals and networks involved in the supply chain, with the authorities committed to taking strict action against offenders.
