Guwahati: Mar 16: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, launched the booklet titled “New Criminal Laws: Standard Operating Procedures and Rules” in Guwahati today. The booklet, compiled by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam, serves as a crucial guide for law enforcement agencies in the North Eastern states, providing standardized procedures and rules for the implementation of the new criminal laws.

The launch event took place during a review meeting on the implementation of these laws across the eight North Eastern states. The meeting was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Manipur Governor Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other Chief Ministers from the North Eastern states, Chief Secretaries, and Directors General of Police (DGPs) from the region.

The new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act in July 2023. These reforms are designed to modernize and standardize the legal framework for criminal justice across the country, including in the North Eastern states.

During the meeting, each state presented updates on the progress of implementing these laws, highlighting their challenges and successes. The aim is to ensure uniformity and efficiency in law enforcement across the region, with a focus on better coordination and capacity building.

Shri Amit Shah emphasized the importance of such initiatives in strengthening the rule of law and improving public safety in the region, calling for continued efforts to enhance legal infrastructure and coordination among state agencies.
