Agartala, March 7: In the run-up to International Women’s Day on March 8, the South Tripura district administration organised a special discussion and one-day workshop on the theme “Child Marriage-Free India” at the Sachin Debbarman Auditorium on Friday. The programme aimed to raise awareness and strengthen collective efforts to eliminate child marriage from society.

The event was inaugurated by South Tripura Zilla Parishad Chairman Dipak Dutta, who emphasised the growing role of women in administrative, social, and political spheres. Addressing the gathering, he said that the overall development of rural society largely depends on the socio-economic empowerment of women. He also urged elected representatives at all levels to actively work towards preventing child marriage and ensuring the protection of children’s rights.

The programme witnessed the participation of representatives from various blocks, panchayats, and village committees, along with students from different educational institutions. Several key officials and experts also attended the event and shared their perspectives on the issue.

Among the prominent speakers were Tripura State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma and South Tripura District Magistrate Md. Sajjad P, who highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts among government departments, civil society organisations, and local communities to curb child marriage effectively.

During the programme, certificates of appreciation were distributed to administrative officers, police stations, and non-governmental organisations in recognition of their contributions to preventing child marriage in the district. Press jackets were also handed over to journalists as a mark of appreciation for their role in spreading awareness on social issues.

Following the main discussion, a public awareness van dedicated to spreading messages against child marriage was flagged off to reach different parts of the district.

Later, a separate workshop for journalists was organised where experts discussed child rights and the crucial role of the media in reporting and raising awareness about child marriage and related social challenges.
