MANGALURU, June 9: The Mangaluru District Youth Congress Committee has expelled its District General Secretary, Nizam, from both his party post and primary membership with immediate effect following his arrest in a sensational extortion case involving ₹2.77 crore.

The action was announced by District Youth Congress President Ibrahim Nawaz, who stated that allegations of involvement in anti-social activities had tarnished the organisation’s discipline and reputation. The party reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and said strict action would be taken against anyone acting against its values and organisational interests.

Nizam and his associate, Jitesh, were arrested by Mangaluru police on Tuesday on charges of blackmailing a prominent businessman and extorting money from him over nearly two years. According to investigators, the duo allegedly used private obscene photographs and videos of the victim to threaten and coerce him into making repeated payments.

Police said Jitesh initially contacted the businessman in 2024 and allegedly demanded ₹35 lakh, threatening to expose the private content to the victim’s family. As the extortion continued, the businessman reportedly approached Nizam for help. However, investigators allege that Nizam instead joined the scheme and became an active participant in the extortion racket.

The probe further revealed that the accused fabricated a suicide story involving Jitesh to intensify pressure on the victim. Nizam allegedly informed the businessman that Jitesh had died by suicide and left a note naming him. To make the claim appear genuine, the accused reportedly circulated photographs purportedly showing Jitesh’s death and funeral.

Fearing legal consequences and public embarrassment, the businessman continued making payments, with the total amount allegedly extorted reaching ₹2.77 crore between 2024 and 2026.

The case surfaced after the victim reportedly spotted Jitesh alive in Mangaluru and subsequently filed a complaint with the Urva Police Station. Police have arrested both accused and are investigating whether more individuals were involved. Meanwhile, photographs of Nizam with several political leaders have gone viral on social media, triggering political debate across Karnataka.
