Agartala, May 15: Former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb has taken on an important diplomatic role as part of a high-level Indian parliamentary delegation visiting Bhutan to strengthen bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

The 51-member delegation, led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, began its official visit on Wednesday. The delegation comprises Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, along with senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Biplab Deb, who currently serves as the President of the India-Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship Group, is playing a key role in discussions focused on enhancing parliamentary exchanges, institutional cooperation and cultural ties between India and Bhutan.

The visit includes several high-level engagements with Bhutanese leadership, including meetings with the King of Bhutan and the Prime Minister. Officials described the visit as strategically important for reinforcing the longstanding friendship, mutual trust and cooperation shared by the two nations.

The participation of parliamentarians from both Houses of Parliament reflects India’s continued emphasis on parliamentary diplomacy as a tool for strengthening international partnerships and regional cooperation.

According to sources, the visit follows a preparatory meeting held recently in New Delhi where members of the delegation discussed plans to deepen cooperation in areas related to governance, parliamentary practices, cultural exchange and people-to-people relations.

Biplab Deb shared details of the visit through social media, expressing appreciation for the warm welcome extended by Bhutanese authorities and citizens.

“Glad to receive a warm welcome in Bhutan as part of the Indian Parliamentary Delegation,” Deb wrote.

He further stated that he was looking forward to meaningful interactions and discussions aimed at further strengthening the historic friendship and parliamentary relations between India and Bhutan.

India and Bhutan share close diplomatic, economic and cultural ties, with both countries maintaining strong cooperation in areas such as trade, education, connectivity, hydropower and regional security.

The parliamentary visit is expected to further consolidate bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation between the two countries at both governmental and institutional levels.
