Agartala, May 15: In a significant boost to medical infrastructure and higher medical education in Tripura, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned Rs 273.46 crore for the infrastructure development of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha shared the development on social media on Thursday and termed the sanction a major milestone for the healthcare and medical education sectors in the state. According to the Chief Minister, the approved funds will facilitate a substantial increase in MBBS and postgraduate medical seats at AGMC from the academic session 2026-27.

As part of the expansion plan, AGMC will add 100 MBBS seats and 83 postgraduate seats across 19 critical and speciality disciplines. The increase is expected to strengthen the state’s capacity to produce trained medical professionals and improve access to advanced healthcare services.

“With the addition of these medical seats, Tripura will have a total of 550 MBBS seats and 196 postgraduate seats. This marks a record increase in the last four years,” Dr Saha stated.

The Chief Minister said the state government remains committed to improving healthcare facilities and creating better opportunities for medical aspirants in Tripura. He added that the infrastructure enhancement at AGMC would not only improve academic standards but also strengthen the healthcare delivery system across the state.

Dr Saha also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda for approving the financial assistance for the project. He credited the Centre’s continued support for accelerating the development of the health sector in Tripura.

The sanctioned amount is expected to be utilised for the expansion of academic blocks, laboratories, hostels, specialised departments and other essential medical infrastructure required for accommodating the increased intake of students and postgraduate trainees.

Officials believe the development will significantly benefit students from Tripura and neighbouring northeastern states by creating more opportunities for medical education within the region.

The expansion of AGMC is also expected to reduce dependency on institutions outside the state for higher medical studies while strengthening Tripura’s position in the healthcare and education sectors in the Northeast.
