Agartala, May 16: Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday inaugurated a state-of-the-art State Data Centre at the Visvesvaraya Complex in Kunjaban, marking a significant step toward strengthening Tripura’s water resource management system through modern technology.

The facility, developed by the Public Works (Water Resources) Department, is aimed at improving monitoring, analysis, and management of water resources across the state. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister said the new centre would ensure greater transparency, efficiency, and faster response mechanisms in tracking underground water levels, river flow patterns, irrigation systems, and flood control measures.

Dr. Saha stated that the introduction of advanced technology in water management would help authorities take informed and timely decisions, particularly during flood situations and natural disasters. He added that the initiative would not only improve administrative functioning but also directly benefit citizens by enhancing public services related to irrigation, flood management, and water conservation.

“The State Data Centre will play a crucial role in collecting and analysing real-time data related to water resources. This will strengthen planning and preparedness while ensuring sustainable use of water resources for future generations,” the Chief Minister said.

Officials of the Water Resources Department informed that the centre would function as a central hub for data collection and integrated monitoring. It will support long-term planning for irrigation expansion, conservation of groundwater, flood forecasting, and disaster management initiatives throughout Tripura.

During the programme, Dr. Saha also praised the contribution of the Water Resources Department in improving irrigation infrastructure in the state. He noted that irrigation facilities have already been extended to nearly 1.5 lakh hectares of agricultural land out of Tripura’s total 2.55 lakh hectares of farmland.

The Chief Minister further appreciated the department’s role in flood control and protection of agricultural areas during monsoon seasons. He said the department’s sustained efforts have helped strengthen resilience among farming communities and minimize damage caused by floods.

The inauguration of the State Data Centre is being seen as a major milestone in Tripura’s push toward technology-driven governance and sustainable natural resource management, positioning the state as a model for integrated water planning in the Northeast.
