Agartala, July 23: The Opposition Congress on Thursday intensified its demand for a judicial inquiry into the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag by staging a symbolic protest outside the official residence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in Agartala.

The demonstration was led by senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Ashish Kumar Saha. Party leaders and supporters gathered near the Chief Minister’s residence carrying party flags and banners, demanding that the state government immediately order a judicial inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court. The party also announced that it would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister reiterating its demand.

A heavy police deployment, led by senior officers including the Superintendent of Police (West District), was in place to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident during the protest.

Addressing the media, Roy Barman said the Congress was not seeking political confrontation but was demanding an impartial and transparent investigation into what he described as the “unnatural death” of the state’s top police officer.

He argued that only a judicial inquiry conducted by a sitting High Court judge could establish the complete truth behind the incident, including whether the death was a case of suicide, homicide or the result of any external pressure.

“We have lost one of Tripura’s finest IPS officers. The people deserve to know what actually happened. Questions regarding possible pressure or any sensitive matters linked to his official responsibilities must be thoroughly examined,” Roy Barman said.

The Congress MLA expressed concern that a routine police investigation could be perceived as lacking independence, asserting that only a judicial probe would inspire public confidence and ensure a credible outcome.

He also urged the government to announce the inquiry without delay, warning that any prolonged decision could result in the loss of crucial evidence.

“If the inquiry is ordered after weeks or months, vital evidence may disappear. The government should act immediately in the interest of justice and transparency,” he said.

The Congress maintained that its demand was aimed at ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence. Party leaders later reiterated that they would formally submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking an immediate judicial inquiry into the death of DGP Anurag.
