Nine CPI(M) legislators in Tripura on Monday met Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention to ensure an independent inquiry into the unnatural death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar. The opposition leaders demanded that the investigation be conducted under the direct supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to ensure transparency and public confidence.

The delegation, led by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, urged the Governor to take appropriate constitutional steps to facilitate an impartial probe into the death of the state’s top police officer, which occurred while he was on official duty at the Tripura Police Headquarters.

In their memorandum, the CPI(M) legislators stated that the death of such a senior constitutional functionary within the police headquarters during office hours had raised serious public concerns and required an inquiry that was independent, credible and beyond reproach.

Referring to reports that the incident had been described as a case of suicide, the opposition leaders said several questions surrounding the circumstances of the death remained unanswered. They clarified that they were not drawing any conclusions but stressed that the existence of public doubts made it essential to establish the truth through a transparent judicial inquiry.

The memorandum noted that the office of the Director General of Police occupies a crucial position in the state’s constitutional and administrative framework. The legislators argued that an independent investigation was necessary not only to determine the facts but also to uphold public faith in governance, law enforcement and the rule of law.

The CPI(M) delegation requested that the inquiry be entrusted to a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court with comprehensive terms of reference. They said the probe should examine the sequence of events leading to the DGP’s death, the circumstances at the place of occurrence, and any official or personal factors that may have contributed to the incident.

The opposition leaders also sought immediate preservation of all relevant evidence, including forensic material, CCTV footage, electronic records, official communications and witness statements, to ensure that the investigation remains fair, independent and expeditious.

The delegation comprised Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Deputy Leader of Opposition Shyamal Chakraborty, party whip Nirmal Biswas, Md Islam Uddin, Dipankar Sen, Ashoke Mitra, Ramu Das, Shailendra Chandra Nath and Sudip Sarker.
