Agartala, July 11 — In a visionary step toward planned urban development, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is formulating a new city master plan titled ‘Greater Agartala’, anticipating the capital’s expansion over the next 20 years.
Announcing the development on Friday, Mayor Dipak Majumder said the plan aims to accommodate Agartala’s growing population and infrastructure needs. “In addition to the existing 51 municipal wards, 49 nearby Gram Panchayats have been included under the new master plan. These areas will be developed as part of the city’s future expansion,” he said.
Highlighting the shortcomings of past development, the Mayor noted that the absence of a comprehensive master plan earlier had led to unplanned urban growth. “The ‘Greater Agartala’ plan includes dedicated zones for metro stations, industrial estates, flyovers, and wide road networks to ensure seamless connectivity as the city grows,” he added.
The master plan has been created using advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to ensure accuracy in land use, urban planning, and infrastructure design. Additionally, the Urban Development Department is working on a 3D model of the city to support the project.
With rising vertical growth and increasing demand for apartments, the AMC is also set to implement new real estate regulations aligned with the updated city layout.
Mayor Majumder confirmed that the first phase of the ‘Greater Agartala’ master plan is complete and under review in the AMC council meeting. “Once necessary approvals are in place, we will move forward to frame policies based on this detailed plan,” he said.
The initiative marks a strategic shift toward sustainable urban growth, aiming to transform Agartala into a modern, well-connected, and future-ready city.
