Agartala, July 11 — In a major step towards digital transformation of the state’s power sector, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has begun widespread implementation of smart electricity meters across the state. The initiative was detailed by TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu during a press conference held at the Corporation’s Bhuturia office on Friday.

Basu showcased the smart meters as part of a live demonstration, emphasizing that these next-generation devices are consumer-friendly and built to enhance service quality and billing transparency. “Smart meters are designed to benefit consumers exclusively. They ensure accurate billing based on real-time consumption, eliminate manual reading errors, and empower users through mobile and web-based monitoring tools,” Basu said.

Tripura currently has approximately 1.026 million electricity consumers. As part of the project, TSECL is prioritizing smart meter installation at the residences and offices of all state ministers and government departments. Additionally, to lead by example and promote awareness, the meters are also being installed in the homes of 2,700 TSECL employees.

Highlighting the key benefits, Basu said smart meters will:

  • Enable real-time energy usage tracking and digital billing

  • Ensure billing accuracy by removing estimated charges

  • Eliminate the need for manual meter reading

  • Automatically alert TSECL about power outages, enabling faster response

Importantly, the installation is being carried out free of charge for all residential and commercial users in the state.

Addressing concerns about misinformation surrounding the initiative, Basu urged consumers not to be misled. “The smart meter rollout is entirely in the public interest and reflects our commitment to transparent, efficient service,” he said.

The launch signals a pivotal moment in Tripura’s energy reform, aligning with national goals for smart infrastructure development.
