Agartala: Nov 08: On Friday, the Mahila Congress of Tripura organized a strong protest in Agartala, demanding accountability from the Tripura Commission for Women for its inaction in the face of rising violence against women and girls. The protesters, including members of the Sadar Mahila Congress, gathered in the capital city, holding banners and placards as they marched towards the office of the Tripura Women’s Commission. Their frustration was symbolically expressed by tying black ribbons over their mouths, a gesture meant to highlight the commission’s “deafening silence” on recent cases of sexual assault, dowry-related violence, and abuse.

The protest was sparked by the growing concern over the increasing incidents of violence against women in the state, including multiple cases of rape and sexual assault. One of the key leaders of the protest, Rupa Roy Das, emphasized the alarming levels of violence, stating that even young girls were no longer safe. She accused the Tripura Women’s Commission of being inactive and “sleeping” despite the escalating crisis. “Today, we are here to awaken them from their slumber,” she said.

The protesters expressed their disappointment with the commission, accusing it of failing to take action on high-profile cases that have shocked the state. They argued that the commission’s silence has only emboldened perpetrators, making women in the state more vulnerable to violence. The demonstrators demanded that the commission take immediate action to investigate these cases and ensure justice for the victims.

The protest concluded peacefully with a call for the state government to prioritize women’s safety, implement stricter laws, and ensure the protection of women’s rights. Meanwhile, the Tripura Human Rights Commission recently took suo motu cognizance of two disturbing cases, further highlighting the urgent need for state intervention in safeguarding women’s rights.
