Agartala, October 21:
Expressing grave concern over the alarming rise in crimes against women and children across Tripura, leaders of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) on Tuesday met senior officials at the State Police Headquarters and submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP). The delegation urged immediate and stringent action against perpetrators of recent heinous crimes and called for stronger institutional responses to gender-based violence.

In the memorandum, AIDWA cited a series of disturbing incidents that occurred between early September and mid-October, including the murder of a seven-year-old girl by her father in Latiyachhara under Kailashahar subdivision, the brutal killing of Geeta Sutradhar at Sadhutala in East Agartala, and the public burning of a housewife, Anjali Sarkar, in Mirza under the Kakraban area. Other cases mentioned involved sexual assault on minors, including the rape and murder of a 14-month-old baby at North Padmabil under Panisagar subdivision, which AIDWA described as one of the most horrifying crimes in recent times.

The association also highlighted incidents of assault on mentally challenged women, exploitation of orphaned girls, and abduction cases, alleging that delayed investigations and lack of police accountability were emboldening offenders.

AIDWA demanded fast-track investigations, exemplary punishment for the accused, and comprehensive support for victims and their families, including legal aid, government-sponsored medical care, and financial compensation. The delegation specifically sought special assistance for the mother of the 14-month-old child who was raped and killed.

Calling for urgent intervention, AIDWA leaders stated that the continuing surge in gender-based violence was eroding public trust in law enforcement. They urged the DGP to take decisive steps to ensure justice, strengthen preventive mechanisms, and restore citizens’ confidence in the state’s policing system.
