Agartala, July 16: In a renewed effort to bring order and modern infrastructure to city markets, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar visited the bustling Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar on Wednesday. The visit aimed at addressing long-standing issues of encroachment, traffic congestion, and unregulated vending in one of Agartala’s busiest commercial areas.

Accompanied by local corporators and AMC officials, the Mayor’s inspection followed earlier public complaints from residents and shoppers. Majumdar emphasized that the market holds strategic importance for the city’s economy and must be managed more efficiently and safely.

Addressing the media during the visit, Majumdar made it clear that the AMC would not tolerate illegal vendor setups. “Only those with valid licenses and proper documentation will be allowed to operate,” he stated. He confirmed that eviction notices would be served to all unauthorized vendors as part of an ongoing crackdown.

To improve vendor conditions and ease congestion, Majumdar also unveiled plans for a temporary market shed that will accommodate up to 130 small vendors. This interim arrangement is intended to ensure continued livelihoods during the transition to a fully redesigned and modernized market space.

Highlighting a broader vision, the Mayor announced that AMC is moving toward scientific redesigning of all major markets under its jurisdiction. The goal is to enhance convenience, safety, and accessibility for both traders and consumers while addressing the growing traffic challenges in commercial areas.

Majumdar also urged the public to avoid buying goods from unapproved roadside stalls, stressing the risks these pose to public safety and health. “Impulse buying from unauthorized vendors not only encourages illegal setups but can also endanger health,” he warned.

The initiative marks a strong step toward creating a more orderly and sustainable urban market environment in Agartala.
