Agartala, August 24: Several flights were diverted to Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala on Sunday afternoon due to adverse weather conditions affecting flight operations in the region, airport sources confirmed.

Among the diverted flights was an IndiGo aircraft carrying Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, which made an unscheduled landing at Agartala. The flight, originally en route to a different destination, was forced to divert due to poor visibility and turbulent weather.

Airport officials stated that the aircraft landed safely and all passengers, including the Chief Minister, were in good health. Standard protocol was followed to ensure passenger comfort and security during the brief halt. The exact duration of the diversion or subsequent travel arrangements for the CM were not immediately disclosed.

In addition to Dr. Sarma’s flight, multiple other commercial flights were rerouted to MBB Airport as a precautionary measure. The airport staff and ground services were put on high alert to manage the unexpected traffic and ensure smooth coordination for arrivals and temporary accommodation of passengers.

The sudden change in weather disrupted flight schedules across parts of the Northeast, impacting travelers and airline operations. Meteorological officials have reported that heavy rains and strong winds were responsible for the poor flying conditions. They have advised caution and closely monitoring the situation for further updates.

The incident highlighted the strategic importance of Agartala’s MBB Airport, which continues to serve as a critical diversion hub for flights in the Northeast region during emergencies and inclement weather.

Authorities are working to normalize operations and resume regular flight schedules as weather conditions improve. Passengers are advised to check with airlines for real-time updates on flight status.
