Agartala, May 13:
Former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb has taken on a significant diplomatic role as part of a high-level Indian parliamentary delegation visiting Bhutan to strengthen bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

The 51-member delegation, led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, began its official visit on Wednesday. The delegation includes Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, along with senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.

The visit is aimed at further deepening the long-standing friendship and institutional ties shared by India and Bhutan. Parliamentary diplomacy, exchange of democratic practices, and strengthening cooperation between the legislatures of the two nations are among the key objectives of the mission.

Biplab Kumar Deb, who currently serves as the President of the India-Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship Group, is playing an important role in discussions related to parliamentary engagement and bilateral cooperation. Officials said his participation highlights the growing importance of parliamentary-level diplomacy in enhancing India’s relationship with neighbouring countries.

During the visit, the Indian delegation is scheduled to hold meetings with Bhutan’s King, Prime Minister, and other senior leaders. The engagements are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in multiple sectors, including culture, governance, development, education, and people-to-people connectivity.

According to sources, the visit follows a preparatory meeting held in New Delhi where members of the delegation discussed strategies to expand parliamentary collaboration and reinforce the historic friendship between the two countries.

The presence of MPs from both Houses of Parliament reflects India’s commitment to strengthening democratic and institutional cooperation with Bhutan through sustained dialogue and exchange programmes.

Sharing his experience on social media, Biplab Kumar Deb expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by Bhutanese authorities.

“Glad to receive a warm welcome in Bhutan as part of the Indian Parliamentary Delegation,” Deb wrote.

“Looking forward to meaningful engagements and discussions aimed at further strengthening the longstanding friendship and parliamentary ties between India and Bhutan,” he added.
