Agartala, Aug 28: The death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag once again triggered heated exchanges in the state Legislative Assembly on Friday, with the opposition demanding a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.

During the reference period, treasury and opposition members engaged in a war of words, leading to uproar in the House. CPI(M) legislators, led by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, entered the Well and raised slogans against the government. They later returned to their seats following repeated appeals from Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia and an assurance from Chief Minister Manik Saha that he would make a statement.

Responding to criticism over the disclosure of the post-mortem findings, Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the Constitution allowed him to refer to the autopsy report in the public interest and in the interest of transparency.

The Chief Minister told the House that the body of DGP Anurag was found hanging in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the state police headquarters on July 20 and that the nature of the death appeared to be suicide.

Opposition Congress and CPI(M) members alleged that the government was preventing a detailed discussion on the issue. Speaker Jamatia clarified that the Chief Minister’s statement had been made under Rule 361 of the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure, under which an immediate debate is not permitted.

Leader of the Opposition Chaudhury and senior Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman described the death of an serving state police chief at his official workplace as unprecedented and renewed their demand for a judicial inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

The government has maintained that a comprehensive police investigation is underway. Saha said investigators were examining post-mortem and forensic reports, digital evidence, call records, electronic devices, CCTV footage and relevant documents. He assured that anyone found guilty of illegal acts would face strict action under law.

A three-member probe team was initially formed on July 24 and was later expanded to 10 members under the leadership of West Tripura SP Namit Pathak.

Anurag had served as Tripura DGP since May 17, 2025, with his tenure scheduled to continue until May 2027. Opposition parties have continued protests demanding a High Court-monitored judicial investigation into his death.
