Agartala: Jan 23: The India-Bangladesh border fencing project has hit a roadblock due to objections from Bangladesh, and the issue is set to be discussed at the upcoming Director General-level meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) .
The project aims to secure villages vulnerable to smuggling and cattle theft by building a “single row fence” around them. However, Bangladesh has raised concerns, citing the 1975 India-Bangladesh Border Guidelines, which prohibit constructing defense structures within 150 yards of the international border.
India maintains that the fencing is essential for preventing cross-border crimes and protecting border residents, but Bangladesh views it as a potential threat to national security. The dispute has led to a diplomatic stand-off, with India hoping to resolve the issue through the upcoming meeting .
In addition to the fencing issue, the meeting will also cover other cross-border challenges, including human trafficking, smuggling, counterfeit currency, and the illegal movement of arms. The BSF aims to enhance cooperation with Bangladesh to address these persistent security concerns effectively.
