Agartala, September 20: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval for an additional 100 MBBS seats, taking its annual intake from 150 to 250 from the 2026-27 academic session.
The expansion marks a significant step forward for medical education in Tripura and is expected to provide more opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medical studies in the state.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the approval and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for supporting the expansion of MBBS seats at AGMC.
In a social media post, Saha said the increase would open up greater opportunities for students from Tripura while strengthening the state’s medical education system and healthcare infrastructure.
AGMC had earlier been admitting 150 MBBS students annually. With the addition of 100 seats, the college will now accommodate 250 students each year, benefiting aspiring medical professionals from Tripura and other parts of the Northeast.
The revised intake places AGMC among medical institutions in the country with an annual capacity of 250 MBBS students. Several established institutions, including Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Gujarat, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, have similar intake capacities.
The increase in seats at AGMC comes amid wider efforts to expand medical education and healthcare infrastructure across the country. The move is expected to strengthen the availability of medical education opportunities in Tripura while contributing to the development of the state’s healthcare sector.
