Agartala, September 24: North Tripura’s approach to water conservation was presented at a national platform in New Delhi on Thursday, with District Magistrate and Collector Chandni Chandran outlining three initiatives at the 9th India International Water Week (IIWW) 2026.
Chandran was a speaker at the Practitioners’ Forum on Best Practices at Bharat Mandapam, where she highlighted the district’s efforts involving the administration, local communities and private-sector organisations in sustainable water-resource management.
She first presented the Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra, an initiative of the district administration designed to strengthen water conservation by encouraging greater participation at the local level.
The rainwater harvesting saturation initiative in Vanghmun was also featured. The community-driven programme focuses on expanding rainwater harvesting coverage and promoting local ownership of conservation efforts.
The third initiative, springshed management in Jampui and Damcherra, is being implemented under the leadership of CML and Tata Trusts. It focuses on protecting and managing spring-based water sources in the district’s hilly terrain.
The initiatives collectively demonstrate a convergence-based approach in which government programmes are supported by community participation and private-sector involvement.
The district administration said continued cooperation among government agencies, communities and private organisations is important for maintaining water conservation measures over the long term.
The presentation at the IIWW forum also brought attention to locally developed approaches for addressing water-resource challenges through integrated planning and community participation.
