Agartala, September 24: The upcoming Durga Puja at Srimantapur in Unakoti district is set to feature a special architectural attraction, with the local Puja committee creating a Somnath Temple-inspired mandap at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 70 lakh.
The Srimantapur Sanghati Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee has been working on the structure for over a month, engaging experienced artisans from West Bengal for the construction and decorative work.
Organisers said the mandap has been designed within the limitations of the available site. Although it will not be a complete replica of the original Somnath Temple, the structure will draw on its architectural elements and seek to recreate its distinctive spiritual atmosphere.
Chandipur MLA and Social Education and Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy visited the venue on Thursday morning to review the progress. He met the organisers and artisans and discussed the construction work as well as preparations for the festival.
Roy expressed hope that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha would formally inaugurate the mandap on Shashthi, as has been done in previous years.
The five-day festivities will include religious and community activities, with arrangements for midday meals and prasad distribution. Cultural programmes, decorative illumination and the release of a Puja magazine are also planned.
The Srimantapur Puja has witnessed considerable footfall in past years. The organisers expect the Somnath-inspired mandap to draw additional visitors and add to the festive atmosphere this year.
Residents said the initiative showcases the collective efforts of the local community while bringing together devotion, traditional festivities and creative craftsmanship.
