Agartala, September 22: Tripura has stepped up its road safety awareness initiatives, stressing responsible road behaviour and greater public participation to prevent accidents and protect lives.
The West Tripura district administration, in association with the Transport Department, organised a district-level Road Safety Awareness and Sensitisation Programme at the State Guest House, Sonar Tori, on Tuesday. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury formally inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Addressing the gathering, Chowdhury said improving road safety requires more than enforcement of traffic laws and called for greater awareness and responsibility among road users.
He urged motorists to follow traffic regulations, maintain prescribed speed limits and use helmets and seatbelts. He also cautioned against driving under the influence of alcohol and stressed the need for motorists to remain considerate towards pedestrians.
“Let us all be more responsible and sensitive in using the roads. Alongside our own safety, we must value the lives of others,” the minister said, calling for conscious drivers and responsible pedestrians to work together towards safer roads.
Officials from the district administration, police and Transport Department attended the programme and highlighted the role of collective action in reducing road accidents. Discussions centred on accident prevention, safer movement of vehicles and strengthening awareness initiatives among the public.
The programme also focused on the need to address reckless driving and encourage behavioural changes among road users. Officials said road safety should be treated as a shared social responsibility rather than an individual concern.
The event concluded with participants reiterating the message, “Safe Roads, Safe Lives”, and reaffirming their commitment to creating safer roads and a secure environment for all road users.
