Former Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik on Sunday visited the grieving family of 10-year-old Abhirup Debnath, who tragically lost his life in a road accident on the night of Maha Ashtami in Dharmanagar. The heartbreaking incident occurred at Netaji Para, casting a deep shadow of sorrow across the community.

Bhoumik arrived at the child’s residence in Shibnath Lane early Sunday morning to offer condolences and stand by the mourning family. She spent time consoling Abhirup’s parents and extended her heartfelt sympathies, assuring them of all possible support during this difficult time.

According to reports, Abhirup and his father had gone out to enjoy the Durga Puja festivities when a speeding vehicle struck them both. Though they were immediately rushed to Silchar in Assam for treatment, the young boy succumbed to his injuries, while his father is now said to be out of danger.

Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as Souvik Deb, who has since been arrested. He was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody. Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage from a nearby marriage hall to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the tragedy.

Accompanying Bhoumik during her visit were former Jubarajnagar MLA Malina Debnath, former Tripura Women’s Commission Chairperson Barnali Goswami, and several local residents who joined in expressing their grief and solidarity with the bereaved family.

The untimely death of little Abhirup has plunged the locality into mourning, with residents demanding stricter enforcement of traffic rules and exemplary punishment for reckless driving. The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger road safety measures to prevent such devastating losses.
