Tripura has added another feather to its cap as senior IPS officer Rajiv Singh has been appointed as Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat of the Government of India, one of the most important positions in the country’s security framework. The appointment marks a significant achievement for the 1993-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre and is being seen as a matter of pride for the state and the Northeast region.

The appointment was officially announced through a government order issued on May 21, 2026. At present, Rajiv Singh is serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, where he has been handling challenging law-and-order responsibilities during a sensitive period in the state.

As Secretary (Security), Singh will assume a highly strategic role involving crucial national security responsibilities. The post is considered one of the most sensitive positions within the central administration as it deals with the coordination and supervision of important security arrangements at the national level. Among its key responsibilities is oversight of matters related to the Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite force entrusted with ensuring the security of the Prime Minister and immediate family members.

Throughout his career, Rajiv Singh has earned a reputation for taking up demanding assignments and effectively managing complex security situations. He assumed charge as the DGP of Manipur in 2023 at a time when the state was experiencing significant ethnic tensions and security challenges. His tenure witnessed efforts aimed at restoring peace and strengthening policing mechanisms in the region.

Apart from his state-level responsibilities, Singh has also held key assignments in various central security organizations, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). His extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, internal security matters and policing in the Northeast has brought him recognition within security and administrative circles.

Officials and observers have described his elevation as an acknowledgment of the contribution made by officers from the Tripura cadre in national service. The appointment also reflects the increasing representation of officers from the Northeast in important positions within India’s security establishment.

The official appointment order was signed by Manisha Saxena, Secretary of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and Establishment Officer under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
