In a major development aimed at improving rail connectivity and passenger convenience, the Ministry of Railways has approved the regular operation of the Agartala–Rani Kamalapati Express, a move expected to greatly benefit passengers traveling between Tripura and central India. The decision comes following a formal request made by former Tripura Chief Minister and current Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb.

The train, which had previously been operating as a special service under train numbers 01666/01665, will now run on a permanent basis under the new designation 11666/11665 Agartala–Rani Kamalapati Express. The service connects Agartala with Rani Kamalapati station in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, providing an important transport link between the Northeast and central India.

The conversion of the train from a special service to a regular one is being viewed as a significant achievement for Tripura. The move is expected to provide passengers with greater certainty in travel planning while ensuring uninterrupted and consistent connectivity for people who frequently travel between the two regions.

Announcing the development through a social media post, Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb expressed gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the proposal. He stated that the decision came after discussions and efforts made regarding the issue and thanked the Railway Minister on behalf of the people of Tripura.

Deb said the move would benefit a large section of society and improve travel opportunities for residents of the state. The regularization of the train service is likely to help students pursuing education outside the state, working professionals, business travelers and families who regularly undertake long-distance journeys.

Residents and commuters across Tripura have welcomed the decision, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening the region’s transport infrastructure. Many believe that regular train services to important destinations outside the Northeast will improve mobility and open up greater opportunities for education, trade and employment.

The decision also reflects the Centre’s continued focus on expanding and modernizing railway infrastructure in the Northeast, with the objective of integrating the region more effectively into India’s broader transport network.
