Agartala/Shillong, May 16: Following the announcement by the Election Commission of India, seven Northeastern states have started preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The Election Commission had on May 14 announced that the SIR exercise would be conducted in a phased manner across 16 states and three Union Territories. The nationwide revision drive aims to improve the accuracy, inclusiveness, and transparency of electoral rolls ahead of future elections.

Among the Northeastern states, Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura have been included in the revision exercise. Assam has already completed its Special Revision process, and the final electoral rolls for all 126 Assembly constituencies were published on February 10, 2026.

In Meghalaya, Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari said the state administration is fully prepared to conduct the Special Intensive Revision in accordance with ECI guidelines. He informed that Meghalaya has been included in the third phase of the exercise, with October 1, 2026 fixed as the qualifying date.

According to officials, preparatory activities including training programmes and printing of enumeration forms will be carried out between June 20 and June 29. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct a house-to-house survey from June 30 to July 29 covering all polling stations in the state.

The draft electoral roll in Meghalaya is scheduled to be published on August 5, while the period for claims and objections will continue till September 4. The final electoral roll will be published on October 7, 2026.

Officials stated that consultations have already been held with political parties to explain the procedures and modalities of the revision process. Political parties have also been requested to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for every polling station to assist Booth Level Officers during the exercise.

Election authorities in other Northeastern states also said preparations are underway to ensure smooth and transparent implementation of the Special Intensive Revision process.

According to the schedule announced by election officials, final electoral rolls will be published on September 6 in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Manipur; September 22 in Arunachal Pradesh; October 7 in Meghalaya; November 22 in Nagaland; and November 23, 2026, in Tripura.
