Agartala, July 18: Tripura Motha Party (TMP) lawmaker Umashankar Debbarma on Friday demanded immediate action to identify and deport Bangladeshi nationals allegedly residing illegally in the Sepahijala district, particularly under the Bishalgarh and Sonamura subdivisions.
Debbarma, who is also a Member of the District Council (MDC) in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), alleged that over 100 Bangladeshi families are illegally living in eight Village Committees (VCs) across the two subdivisions.
“Today, we met Sepahijala Superintendent of Police (SP) Bijoy Debbarma and submitted a memorandum requesting urgent intervention to detect and deport these Bangladeshi citizens,” Debbarma told reporters.
He stated that the party delegation had provided specific details and locations of the settlements where the illegal immigrants are reportedly residing. The SP, according to Debbarma, assured the delegation that he would escalate the issue to the District Magistrate of Sepahijala, Siddhartha Jaiswal, and coordinate with the Forest Department to take appropriate action.
The Tripura Motha Party, which is an ally of the BJP-led coalition government in the state, has repeatedly raised concerns over the issue of cross-border infiltration. The party believes that unchecked illegal immigration poses serious threats to the state’s demography, resources, and security.
TMP leader David Debbarma is currently on a 2,500-kilometre “Delhi Cholgo Abhiyan” march aimed at drawing national attention to the infiltration issue in Tripura and other northeastern states. The campaign seeks to highlight the longstanding problem of illegal immigration from across the Bangladesh border.
Earlier, TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma had also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting his intervention to strengthen border surveillance and implement firm measures to prevent infiltration.
The demand by TMP reflects growing concerns among tribal communities and local political leaders regarding the socio-political impact of alleged illegal immigration and calls for stricter enforcement of immigration laws in Tripura.
