AGARTALA, June 9: Tripura Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy on Tuesday said that a series of welfare schemes introduced by the state government are playing a significant role in discouraging child marriage and expanding social security coverage for vulnerable sections of society.

Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat, Roy highlighted key initiatives announced in the 2025-26 state budget, particularly the Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana, which aims to prevent child marriage among economically weaker and Antyodaya families.

Under the scheme, eligible families receive financial assistance of ₹50,000 for the marriage of daughters who have attained the legal age of 18 years. The benefit can be availed for up to two daughters in a family. Roy said the scheme was introduced to encourage families to support girls’ education and future prospects while discouraging underage marriages.

Launched in October last year, the scheme has already received more than 50 applications, with assistance provided to 45 beneficiaries so far. The Minister expressed confidence that the initiative would help reduce child marriage cases in the state, with district administrations, Child Welfare Committees, police and other stakeholders working together to address the issue.

Roy also highlighted the Mukhyamantri Balika Samriddhi Yojana, under which a fixed deposit of ₹50,000 is created in the name of a girl child born into eligible Antyodaya families. The amount becomes accessible when the beneficiary turns 18 and can be used for higher education or other developmental purposes. A total of 105 girl children have benefited from the scheme.

Another major initiative is the Chief Minister’s Scheme for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (CMSPID), which provides a monthly assistance of ₹5,000 to eligible beneficiaries. Nearly 4,000 individuals have enrolled under the programme, with 3,492 already receiving benefits.

The Minister added that over 20,000 persons with disabilities continue to receive a monthly allowance of ₹2,000 under existing welfare programmes. He urged eligible citizens to avail themselves of the benefits while reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive social development.
