The Union Cabinet has approved bills to implement the ambitious ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, with draft legislations expected to be introduced during the ongoing Winter session of Parliament, according to sources reported by PTI. The approval was granted during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan aims to synchronize the elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies, with the intention of conducting these elections simultaneously in a phased manner. This proposal is based on the recommendations made by a high-level committee in September 2024, which thoroughly examined the feasibility of holding these elections together. The committee’s recommendations have now been accepted by the government, signaling a significant step toward achieving this goal.

The move is expected to streamline the electoral process, reduce the financial burden of holding multiple elections, and ensure a more efficient use of resources. Proponents argue that it would lead to less disruption, allowing both the government and the electorate to focus on governance and development without the constant cycle of elections. The plan could also reduce the costs associated with conducting separate elections for the central and state legislatures.

However, the proposal has faced some criticism, with concerns about its impact on federalism and the potential challenges in aligning electoral timelines across states with differing political landscapes. Despite these concerns, the government is moving ahead with the legislative process, and the draft bills will be introduced in Parliament soon. The success of this initiative will depend on political consensus and careful planning to address the complexities of implementing such a large-scale electoral reform.
