Agartala, Oct 27 : The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday launched a Rs 1.5-crore project for the renovation and beautification of a pond adjacent to Women's College in Ward No. 22, as part of efforts to improve the city's urban infrastructure and preserve waterbodies.
The foundation stone for the project was laid at Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani in the presence of Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, Ward No. 22 Councillor Himani Debbarma and other dignitaries.
According to civic officials, the project will cover the renovation of the pond and development of its surrounding area to create a cleaner, more attractive and organised public space. The initiative is also aimed at promoting environmental conservation and improving the civic amenities in the locality.
Addressing the gathering, Majumder said the municipal corporation had been working over the past several years to improve civic services, address residents' concerns and make Agartala cleaner and more beautiful.
Referring to the city's waterlogging problem, the mayor said several localities that earlier faced severe inundation even after brief spells of rain had witnessed considerable improvement following the installation of pumping systems and other drainage-related measures.
He said the civic body would take additional steps to strengthen the city's drainage infrastructure and reduce the impact of waterlogging during the monsoon.
Majumder also urged residents to cooperate with the municipal authorities in maintaining cleanliness and preventing the accumulation of waste in public spaces.
He appealed to people to use designated garbage disposal points and AMC's door-to-door waste collection services rather than dumping refuse in open areas, drains and ponds. Such practices can obstruct drainage channels and aggravate urban flooding, he said.
Emphasising public participation, the mayor said the success of civic development initiatives depended not only on the efforts of the municipal corporation but also on the cooperation of residents.
He further highlighted the AMC's ongoing efforts to clean, restore and rejuvenate neglected ponds and other waterbodies across Agartala, with the objective of preserving these natural assets and improving the city's environment.
The Women's College pond project is part of these broader efforts to enhance urban infrastructure while protecting waterbodies.
Civic officials expressed hope that the redevelopment would improve the area's appearance and provide residents with a better-maintained public space once the work is completed.
