Agartala, April 19: Barely days after the declaration of results for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, sporadic incidents of violence in different parts of Tripura have sparked concerns over law and order, even as police authorities maintain that the situation is now under control.

The unrest comes in the wake of a decisive victory by the TIPRA Motha Party, which secured 24 out of 28 seats in the council polls, the results of which were announced on April 17. Although the party is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state assembly, it had contested the ADC elections independently.

Reports over the past two days suggest that several BJP offices and supporters were allegedly targeted, with suspicion directed at sections of TIPRA Motha supporters. However, the party leadership has distanced itself from these incidents.

Reacting to the situation, BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee said the party has activated its leadership across levels to assess the ground situation. Ministers and senior leaders have been visiting affected areas and interacting with those impacted by the violence. He added that he would soon meet Director General of Police Anurag to demand swift action against those responsible.

Bhattacharjee also criticised TIPRA Motha, stating that while the party promotes unity through slogans like ‘Thansa’, the current unrest reflects divisions within communities. He stressed that governance within the TTAADC should focus on development and welfare rather than allowing tensions to escalate.

Meanwhile, TIPRA Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman issued a strong appeal for peace, urging people to rise above political differences. “Those being attacked and those attacking are all part of the same community. Violence will only deepen divisions,” he said, calling for a renewed focus on jobs, development, and rights.

DGP Anurag acknowledged that isolated incidents occurred immediately after the results but stated that the situation has since stabilised. He noted that senior officers and security personnel have been deployed across vulnerable areas, with regular patrolling and monitoring in place.

Police have reported no major incidents in the past 24 hours and described the current situation as peaceful. Authorities have also warned of strict legal action against anyone involved in violence, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach to maintaining order in the sensitive post-election period.
