Agartala, July 31: The Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO), the first phase of Census 2027, will begin across Tripura on August 1 and continue till August 30, with more than 8,000 enumerators set to visit every household in the state, officials said on Friday.

Director of Census Operations, Tripura, Ratan Biswas, said the field exercise follows the successful completion of the Self-Enumeration (SE) process, which began on July 17 and concluded on July 31. Through the online self-enumeration facility, citizens voluntarily submitted household information using the official Census portal.

According to Biswas, more than 50,000 families in Tripura completed the self-enumeration process. Households that did not avail themselves of the online option will now be covered through door-to-door visits by trained enumerators assisted by supervisors across all eight districts of the state.

The first phase of the Census focuses on collecting information related to housing conditions, household composition, civic amenities, and assets owned by families. Enumerators will gather information using a structured questionnaire containing 33 notified questions divided into four broad sections.

Biswas assured citizens that all information collected under the Census Act, 1948, would remain strictly confidential. He said the Census authorities have adopted advanced digital encryption and data protection measures to ensure that the information cannot be leaked or used for any purpose other than statistical analysis, policy formulation, and development planning.

He also clarified that residents are not required to produce any identity proof or official documents while responding to Census officials. The District Magistrates and Collectors of all eight districts, along with the Municipal Commissioner of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, have been designated as Principal Census Officers to supervise the exercise.

Officials said the second phase, involving Population Enumeration, will be conducted in February 2027. During this phase, detailed demographic, social, and economic information about every individual will be collected.

Census 2027 marks a significant milestone as it is being conducted using digital technology for the first time in India. While data will be collected through a dedicated mobile application, the traditional door-to-door survey will continue to ensure comprehensive and inclusive coverage.

The administration has appealed to all residents to cooperate fully with enumerators and supervisors to ensure the successful completion of the nationwide Census exercise.
