Agartala, September 21: Police arrested two youths and recovered 18 kilograms of cannabis during a late-night patrol near the College Tilla Lake embankment under East Agartala Police Station, officials said.
The seizure was made late Saturday night when police personnel on routine patrol noticed the two youths behaving suspiciously in the area. The officers stopped them and carried out a search, during which the cannabis was allegedly found in their possession.
The two accused were subsequently detained and taken to East Agartala Police Station along with the seized contraband.
Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar said the recovery was made following the patrol team's vigilance. He said a case has been registered under relevant legal provisions and that further investigation is in progress.
According to police, investigators are now examining the source of the cannabis and where the consignment was allegedly being taken. Efforts are also underway to establish whether the arrested persons have any connection with a wider narcotics supply network.
The latest recovery comes as police continue surveillance and patrolling in different parts of Agartala and its adjoining areas as part of ongoing efforts to check the movement of illegal drugs.
Police said information gathered during the investigation could help identify the supply chain behind the seized consignment and determine whether other persons were involved.
Authorities reiterated that intensified checking and patrols would continue in areas considered vulnerable to narcotics-related activities. The seizure near College Tilla has also drawn attention to the need for continued monitoring of locations where residents have raised concerns over drug-related activity.
The investigation remains underway, with police seeking to establish the full circumstances surrounding the transportation of the seized cannabis.
