Agartala, July 27: Tripura and Mizoram are set to resume efforts to resolve their long-pending inter-state border dispute, with senior officials of the two state governments expected to meet in Agartala next week. The proposed meeting will focus on the 109-km boundary shared by the two Northeastern states and is aimed at paving the way for a lasting solution through dialogue.

A senior Tripura government official said the official-level discussions are likely to be followed by a meeting between Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma. While the date for the Chief Ministers’ meeting has not yet been finalised, both sides have expressed willingness to take the dialogue process forward.

According to officials in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Dr. Saha revived the initiative to resolve the border issue through mutual discussions during the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held in Shillong on June 4. During the meeting, Saha proposed that senior officials from both states first hold detailed discussions before the two Chief Ministers meet to consider their recommendations. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma reportedly agreed to the proposal.

The NEC plenary was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, and the Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight Northeastern states.

The Tripura-Mizoram border dispute has remained unresolved for decades, with tensions periodically surfacing whenever either state undertakes development or construction activities in areas claimed by both sides.

One such incident occurred in May 2025, when unidentified miscreants hurled explosives at an under-construction eco-tourism facility at Phuldungsei village along the disputed border in North Tripura district, causing significant damage. The tourism project, estimated at ₹3.12 crore, is being implemented under the Centre’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme to promote tourism in the region.

Following the incident, police from both states increased security deployment, while officials conducted joint visits to the area to maintain peace. The Tripura government also took up the matter with Mizoram through official channels.

Officials expressed hope that the upcoming discussions would help build consensus and move both states closer to an amicable and permanent resolution of the long-standing border dispute.
